Sikkim Speaker to attend 55th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference

Gangtok, September 12: Sikkim Legislative Assembly Speaker KT Gyaltsen will be attending the 55th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference at Arusha, Tanzania along with other Indian delegates.

The Arusha conference is slated to begin from September 28 and end on October 6 and will focus on ‘Climate Change, the role of Parliament in shaping the information society, developing mechanisms to remedy root causes of political, economic and social conflicts’.

A brief meting of the participating Indian delegation was held recently at the Parliament House Annexe, New Delhi which was also attended by Mr. Gyaltsen.

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumari had chaired the meeting during which the Lok Sabha secretary general invited specific inputs from the delegation regarding the different subjects for the workshops and for the plenary session.

On the role of Parliamentarians in the elimination of violence against women with particular reference to domestic violence, Mr. Gyaltsen raised concern over the implementation of laws with specific regard to the social justice and right to women.

“We are talking about social justice, right to women and things like that. Acts are there, laws are made and we are making more and more legislations. But to what extent they are being implemented and how they are being implemented. This is one point which we have to think about”, Mr. Gyaltsen said.
