GANGTOK, August 9: Sikkim is all set to host the 39th All India Inter Institution Table Tennis Championship from August 25 to 29 at Paljor Namgyal Indoor Stadium here in the Capital.
The tournament will be organized under the banner of Sikkim Table Tennis Association (STTA) and Sikkim Veterans Table Tennis Association (SVTA) under the aegis of Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) the highest board of Table Tennis in India.
An appraisal general meeting of the organizing committee for the upcoming tournament was held today at Paljor Stadium which was followed by a press meet.
NK Pradhan, the Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Department who is also the patron of the organizing Committee attended the meeting as the chief guest.
The meeting was also attended by HK Karki, the Secretary of Sports and Youth Affairs Department and the members of the organizing team.
CK Basnet, the President of STTA while making a power point presentation informed more than 400 players from 34 premium institutions all over the country along with Sikkimese players will be participating in the mega sport event. He said that the winner will be awarded a cash prize of rupees up to Rs. 2.5 lakhs.
The main attractions of the tournament would be the common wealth game winners, Arjuna awardee and the noted veteran national TT players such as Namu Das, Nehar Agarwal, Sharad Kamal, Subojhit Shah,
Several sub-committees have been formed in order to co-ordinate the event.
NK Pradhan in his brief address said that no stone will be left unturned in making the sport event successful.
It was also informed that on August 7 a high level official from TTFI visited Gangtok, to inspect the preparation for the championship. The officials were Shrimati Mantu Ghosh, Jt. Secretary TTFI accompanied by Mr. Subrata Roy, Secretary North Bengal Table Tennis Association (NBTTA).
The highlight of the visit was to inform and check the arrangements for the championship such as the placement of the playing boards and other arrangement. The tournament will be telecasted live through DD sports.
