Quality education key to state’s progress, asserts Sikkim Chief Minister


Gangtok,august16: The present Sikkim Democratic Front government has made quality education its main priority. “There will be no compromise in quality education. I want to develop education sector as an industry. Our students would get world class education to compete with the people of other countries,” said Chief Minister Dr. Pawan Chamling in his Independence Day address at Palzor Stadium 15th August morning.
He said, “I have done many things for Sikkim. But the only thing in which I lagged behind is education. I should have done more for education. If I had done this, the State would have progressed more”.
63rd Independence Day was celebrated in the capital with much enthusiasm and patriotic zeal. Chief Minister, who was chief guest of the celebration programme, was received by new Chief Secretary Mr. T.T. Dorjee and Director General of Police, Mr. C. Ravindran, before he hoisted the national flag and inspected guard of honour riding in a jeep.
Tibet Boarder Police, Seema Suraksha Bal, Indian Reserve Battalion, Sikkim Police, Road Safety Platoon of Traffic Branch, TNA Band (Brass and Pipe), Army Band and Sikkim Police Band performed the colourful I-Day parade in the ground. Chief Minister in his address said, the country got independence after many sacrifices of many great leaders and “so we are enjoying the independence”. He added, “We have to prepare the young generation to protect the independence and freedom in future”. He said his government is very keen to provide such a system in which every citizen of the state would get benefit of every rights provided by the Constitution of India. He rued saying most of the people in Sikkim do not want to acknowledge the achievements of Sikkim. “If we do not realize our achievements and praise Sikkim, then who would come to appreciate these? he asked. Quoting Salman Rushdie he said truth is truth and appealed to the people to accept the truth. What the development and progress they have seen is true, he asserted. Chief Minister appealed to intelligentsia and said “You people should come forward to vent your opinion for a better and self-reliant Sikkim. If you do not speak then fools would have a spell over the state,’ he said. Regarding Sikkim University, he said the land is prepared for Sikkim University and he had requested the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to come for laying foundation stone of the University.
On the occasion, Chief Minister presented state award, meritorious service award, roll of honour, Jeewan Raksha Puraskar, certificate and award for meritorious performance to Group D workers and Rajya Van Sangrakshan Evam Paryavaran Puraskar, 2009.
Chief Minister also launched Poultry Mission 2009-12 and Dairy Mission 2009-12 of Department of Animal Husbandry, Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary Services department. He also launched health schemes - Mukhya Mantri Bima Yojana for BPL families, Mukhya Mantri Antyodaya Pustahaar Yojana for BPL families, Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccines for children in the age group of 15 to 18 months.
On the occasion Chief minister released a book “Traditional herbal healers of Sikkim” published by Forest department. A football match between Seema Suraksha Bal and Denzong boys club was also held on the day in which SSB defeated Denzong by 5-4 goals. The winner team was given cash prize of Rs.5,000 and runners up got Rs.10,000.
