Pigeon deaths trigger fear in Rangpo


RANGPO, August 26: The sudden death of pigeons at Rangpo, Darjeeling area since a month back has been the topic of panic within the local residents of late.
About 80 percent of pigeons have died in this area, said local residents.
According to them, there are times pigeons fall on the ground suddenly while they are flying. “As it falls, blood comes out from one side of the eye and they die,” residents described.
Similar case was noticed few months ago at Singtam. This case has created panic among the locals as some fear the revival of bird flu while some shrug it off as food poisoning.
“If the deaths in pigeons trigger bird flu, chances are there that it will easily affect the residents of Rangpo, Sikkim side as it is few steps away from Rangpo, Darjeeling side.
