Miss Nepal beauty pageant to be held soon

KATHMANDU: A bevy of Nepalese fair ladies are all set to catch the nation's attention with Nepal's oldest beauty pageant being re-launched
after it was stalled last year under Maoists' threat.
Applications from the girls aged between 19 and 25 to select the first Miss Nepal of the Federal Democratic Republic Nepal have been invited by the organisers.

The popular 15 year-old event of Miss Nepal pageant will take place after a year's gap as the Maoists opposed it last year after it emerged as the largest party in the Constituent Assembly.

The Hidden Treasure, the main organiser of the event, has asked the aspiring unmarried girls to submit their application forms, which can be downloaded from its website, by August 28.
Last year the event had to be postponed at the last minute due to the strong opposition by the Maoists.

"Only affluent women, who can afford cosmetics and elegant dresses can participate in the contest, so it widens the gap between the rich and the poor", argues chief of the Maoists' women's wing Amrita Thapa, whose anti-pageant campaign last year led to cancellation of the event.

Now after the dissolution of the Maoist led government in May the organisers of the event seem to be encouraged.
This year's pageant theme is "empowering women for the betterment of country's development," the press statement said.
