Mishap at north Sikkim kills GREF labourer

GANGTOK, August 29: A GREF labourer was cut into three pieces when heavy stones slipped and crashed into him during the ongoing North Sikkim highway double laning works at 14th Mile, Kabi-Tingda today afternoon.

The mishap was injured four other labourers.

According to the labourers who had rushed to STNM hospital here for medical treatment, a team of 18 GREF labourers were loading stones into a truck at 14th Mile when suddenly heavy stones perched overhead from the road side slipped into five labourers.

Twenty one year old Ravi Ram Murmu was killed at spot. His body was cut into three pieces by the impact of the stones, said the labourers. He was from Assam.

Sushant Saha (23) and Santosh Henron (22) suffered fractures and are being treated here at STNM hospital. The condition of Mr. Henron is said to be serious as he had suffered injuries in the head.

The other two injured labourers suffered minor injures and were treated at GREF camp at Kabi-Tingda.

The labourers were working in the double laning process for the past 6-7 months.
