Landslide with flash flood take heavy toll in West Sikkim


Gangtok: Two persons were killed and 10 others injured following a series of landslides and flashfloods triggered by incessant rains between Sombaria and Daramdin in West Sikkim Wednesday night.
Puspa Mani Pradhan of Sombaria and Sameer Subba of East Sikkim died on the spot when flashflood washed away at least 25 houses, two RCC bridges and claimed a dozen of cattle in Sombaria at around 8.30 PM on August 19. The deceased were traveling in a vehicle, SK 04 7457 when they along with the vehicle were buried by the slide. Falily of Puspa Mani Pradhan has been given ex-gratia payment of Rs.one lakh.
Those injured are: Santosh Sharma, Ashis Chettri, Laxmi Rai, Gorakh Rai, Rupesh Pradhan, K. B. Gurung and P. B. Gurung. Mr. Sharma, Asstt. Engineer of Block Administrative Centre, Darammin, has been taken to Silliguri by helicopter for treatment.Several roads between Sombaria and Daramdin are washed off. Rescue operation jointly by SSB and Sikkim police is underway.

Minister RB Subba, MLA Daramdin Tenzi Sherpa, BDO Soreng, West District Collector, and other officials visited the affected area to take stock of the situation.
On the other hand, Sikkim was cut off for a few hours on the day after the NH 31 A was blocked due to a landslide between Sevoke and Rambi under Kalimpong sub-division. The highway was however restored by BRO workers later part on the day.
