Decks cleared for Sikkim airport

Gangtok, Aug 22 (PTI) Sikkim government has cleared the decks for construction of a greenfield airport at Pakyong, official sources said today.

Private developer Punj Loyd Ltd has been allotted 197.72 hectare land for the airport project, while other government departments too have completed all formalities required for the purpose, official sources said.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) was informed of the initiatives taken by the state government to expedite the construction works for the project.

Construction work at the Pakyong airport project site would commence in full swing after the monsoon, the sources said.

The Centre had awarded the Pakyong airport project to Punj Loyd late last year.

The Pawan Kumar Chamling government had been urging the Centre over the past few years for an airport in Sikkim as it would boost connectivity to the border state and give a fillip to tourism
