Sikkim Lepchas seek Priya’s help

Gangtok, Oct.18: Lepchas of North Sikkim agitating against proposed power projects at Dzongu in Sikkim met the Union information and broadcasting minister, Mr Priya Ranjan Das Munshi at Kaliyaganj in North Dinajpur today and sought his intervention in stopping the construction work of the proposed hydroelectric power projects at Dzongu in North Sikkim.
The Lepcha representation led by Mr Tamsang met Mr Das Munshi and urged him to take up the matter at the national level and halt the project as it is coming up in area they hold sacred. Mr Tamsang said: "There were 27 hydel power production units in Sikkim and there is power crisis. Yet, the government is bent upon destroying the environment, culture and heritage of Sikkim in the name of development."According to him, the power project would destroy rivers, hills, vegetation and wildlife at Dzongu.Mr Das Munshi promised to bring the issue to the notice of the Sikkim chief minister Pawan Chamling and the Union power ministry. "From my end I would request them to reconsider the matter," he, said.
