A Profile :SHRI SUDARSHAN AGARWAL, SIKKIM GOVERNOR


Sudarshan Agarwal the present Governor of Sikkim was serving as Governor of Uttaranchal, having been appointed to that office by the President of India in January 2003. Before this appointment he served as Member of the National Human Rights Commission for a period of 3 years in the rank of a Judge of the Supreme Court.He also served as Secretary-General, Rajya Sabha from 1981 to 1993. As Secretary-General he participated in several Parliamentary Conferences and International Goodwill delegations around the world.
Sudarshan Agarwal has been the President of the Delhi Gymkhana Club, the premier social club in the capital during 1986-1988. He is also a Trustee of the Amity Business School. He is a Trustee of a Cultural Centre, known as the Sanskriti Pratishthan. He is Chairman of the Uttaranchal State Red Cross Society and Chairman of the State Child Welfare Council.Sudarshan Agarwal conducted the election of the President of the Republic of India on two occasions in 1982 and 1992 as Chief Returning Officer.
A Rotarian of 45 years standing, he is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Delhi. He served Rotary International as District Governor, Director, Member and Chairman of several Rotary International Committees. He is the recipient of the Rotary Foundation's citation for Meritorious Service and Rotary Foundation Distinguished Service Award for his support of its international humanitarian and educational programmes. He is also a Major Donor to The Rotary Foundation. He has served as Chairman of Rotary Foundation (India) from 1992 till 2002.
He is a Trustee of the Rotary Service to Humanity Awards Trust which gives an Award of Rs. 2 lakhs each year for outstanding work in the field of community service, vocational excellence and promotion of international understanding.
He has been instrumental in setting up a state-of-the-art voluntary Blood Bank in Delhi at a cost of over Rs. five crores.
Soon after taking oath of office in January 2003, he set up a Foundation to provide scholarships to bright, poor students for professional courses. He has already raised over Rs. 8 crores for this initiative. 70 students are receiving a scholarship of over Rs. 25,000 each year for their professional studies for the full duration of the course. He is setting up a boarding school for bright girls from impoverished families of Uttaranchal. The school will be free for these girls and will be funded out of interest earned on the corpus funds.Born on June 19, 1931 at Ludhiana, Sudarshan Agarwal is a first class Law Graduate. His wife Usha, is a diploma holder in Home Science. They have two children, a son who is in the advertising industry and a daughter who is a full Professor in Management at the University of Maryland in USA.
Sudarshan Agarwal was conferred the Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by the Gurukul University in Uttaranchal.
