Dress code at Miss Tibet contest proves to be a crowd-puller

Naddi (McLeodganj), October 12:The sixth edition of the Miss Tibet Pageant began with much fanfare at the Asia Health Resort here. The first day of the three-day pageant saw the swimsuit round today. Despite opposition within the Tibetan community, the swimsuit round, which was thrown open to the public for the second time, attracted many Tibetans, particularly youth. Only five Tibetan beauties are taking part in the contests, like previous years. However, the organisers find solace in the fact that a local girl is taking part in the contest and that too with the support and permission of her parents.
Over the years, the Miss Tibet Pageant has not found much support from the Tibetan community living here. Although the Tibetan community remains divided over the issue, the organisers continue to hold the contest regularly despite a severe financial crunch. However, the Tibetan youth are not only enthusiastic about the competition, but also taking keen interest in it.
Twenty-year-old Deeki Dolma from Gangtok, Sikkim; Tenzin Dolma, 21, from McLeodganj; Tenzin Pema, 19, from Clement Town, Dehradun; Tenzing Dolma, 25, from Gangtok and Tsering Yangzom, 20, from Kollegal, Karnataka, are the participants this year.
The presentation and talent rounds would be held tomorrow at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, McLeodganj, and the grand finale is slated for October 14 evening.
Lobsang Wangyal, organiser of the contest, said the contestants have been provided one-week training in yoga, dance and catwalk. Besides, an orientation programme on Tibetan culture, current affairs, environmental issues, human rights and music has also been organised, he added.
