Japan is one of the leading tourist generating markets for India, with approximately 1.2 lakh tourists from Japan visiting India during 2006, an increase of over 15.5% as compared to the previous year.
During the visit of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India to Japan in December 2006, a Joint Statement designating the year 2007 as the ‘India - Japan Tourism Exchange Year’, was signed between the two countries for cultural exchanges and to increase the two way flow of tourism.
The Ministry of Tourism has, accordingly, organized a number of promotional activities in Japan to showcase and promote promote India as a tourist destination in the Japanese market and has also dovetailed many of its activities with the events being organized by ICCR during the year.
As part of the Joint Statement issued, it was decided that India would participate in events including the JATA World Travel Fair, being held in Tokyo, Japan in September 2007. JATA (Japan Association of Travel Agents), is a body of Japanese travel trade which organizes its world trade show and conferences/seminars annually. Several tourist destinations participate in the trade show in order to interact with the Japanese travel industry and to promote their destination. It, therefore, provides the ideal forum for promoting India.
Among the various activities planned during the JATA World Travel Fair, is an “Incredible India” Seminar being organized by FICCI on the 12th September 2007, followed by a Road Show in the evening, organized by the India tourism office in Tokyo, which will be attended by the Minister of Tourism of Japan.
An India Pavilion is being set up by the Ministry in an area of 72 sq. mtrs. with participation of the State Governments of Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir and Sikkim as well as Travel Trade representatives as co-exhibitors in the India Pavilion, so as to showcase the varied tourism products of the country. Added attractions during the event will include demonstrations of ayurvedic / therapic massages and cultural performances.
Sikkim will be represented by Sikkim Tourism Minister R.B.Subba & Tourism Secretary cum Commissioner G.P.Upadhaya.
