Sikkim tops in Total Sanitation Campaign


September 07, 2007: The Ministry of Rural Development is vigorously implementing Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC). The sanitation coverage has now gone up to 46 per cent, which was merely 1 per cent in the year 1981, and 21 per cent in 2001. In last three years more than 3 crore households have been provided with household latrines, apart from school toilets, Anaganwadi toilets and sanitary complexes. The Ministry has sanctioned project for 573 districts of the country to construct 11.60 crore individual household latrines, 10.16 lakh school toilets, 3.70 lakh Anaganwadi latrines and 27,900 sanitary complexes.
The Ministry is monitoring its implementation on regular basis and releasing comparative performance of States in implementation of TSC in physical and financial terms.
Based on the performance received up to the month of July, 2007, the States have been ranked with respect to their physical and financial performance. In terms of physical performance, the States of Sikkim, Tamil Nadu & Tripura are respectively at top three positions. In financial terms also, these three States are at the top three positions.
