Gangtok: Sikkim remained cut off from the rest of the country for the 15th day on Monday with incessant rain impeding the repairing of NH 31A, a sizable stretch of which was damaged in a landslip.
The authorities are worried as supply of essentials and fuel to the State has been affected. Chief Secretary N.D. Chingapa held a meeting with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) officials and other department heads to find out ways to deal with the situation. The Highway had suffered 35 breaches, of which three are major, said a BRO official.
A temporary arrangement will be in place in a couple of days to open the road for traffic.
The supply of essential food articles and vegetables has been affected. However, a Food Corporation of India official said there was enough stock of rice and wheat to take care of the State’s needs for three months.
The State was cut off from rest of the country on August 27 when a major landslip occurred at Sevoke, near Siliguri, in neighbouring West Bengal. The repair works were hampered by incessant rains. The situation worsened after a fresh landslip in the Tarkhola area in Kalimpong district.
