SIKKIM PREPARES FOR PANCHAYAT POLLS


SEC announces October 1 as the last date of filing nomination
GANGTOK, September 24: The State Election Commission has called upon all the Panchayat Wards of Gram Panchayats and all the Territorial constituencies of Zilla Panchayats in the state to elect new members of Gram and Zilla Panchayats.
According to a press release issued by the State Election Commission, the last date for filing nomination is slated on October 1 while the last date of scrutiny of nomination and withdrawal of candidates are fixed on October 3 and October 5 respectively.
The release further adds that the date of the polls, ‘if necessary’, will take place on October 26 from 8am to 4pm. The elections would be completed before November 11.
All District Collectors have been appointed as Returning Officers of territorial constituencies of Zilla Panchayats for accepting the nomination papers of contesting candidates and scrutiny of nomination papers.
Gram Panchayats of three districts of East, West and South have been separately grouped and the Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers separately appointed for accepting the nomination papers of contesting candidates and scrutiny of nominations. However, District Collector of North shall act as Returning Officer for accepting the nomination of contesting candidates for all Gram Panchayats of North District.
All nomination papers of the contesting candidates in the districts of East, South and North shall be accepted at the respective district headquarters and the nomination papers in the district of West accepted at Gyalshing and Soreng. Scrutiny of nomination papers of the candidates contesting elections to Gram Panchayats and Zilla Panchayats shall be made at the district headquarters of Gangtok, Mangan, Namchi and Gyalshing.
