Landslides claim six lives in Darjeeling


Darjeeling: Six people were killed today and two feared dead in the recurrent landslides that took place in the last three days in the Darjeeling district. About 44 houses have been damaged.
It has also disconnected Kalimpong and Sikkim from Siliguri, the commercial capital of North Bengal.
District Magistrate of Darjeeling, Rajesh Pandey, said, "The landslides were triggered by incessant rainfall in the last few days."
Six of the deceased belonged to three separate villages in the Kalimpong sub-division and two were from Kurseong. Kamal Tiruah, 45, his daughter Sita, 18, of Bhalukopa, two others from Mangal basti and another person at Kukhleinkhani died due to the landslides.
Sekh Mohammad Daud, a chowkidaar in a Kalimpong school, was burried under a huge rock after he managed to shift the school children to a safer place. His wife, Sita Gurung, also received serious injuries.
Monmoya Tamang, 40, and her son Sujan, 11, are feared to be dead in a landslide near St Mary's in Kurseong.
The Army was called in to conduct rescue operations. Apart from loss of life, the area suffered a heavy loss of property.
The landslides occurred mainly along the National Highway-31 A in Sevok, disrupting the connectivity between Kalimpong and Siliguri has been disrupted. As a result, for the past few days, there has been no supply of vegetables and other food products from Siliguri. Incessant rainfall has also resulted in the overflowing of river Teesta.
