Gangtok, Sept. 24 (PTI): As Kolkata police constable, Prashant Tamang, was crowned the new 'Indian Idol' in the grand finale of the over two-month-long talent hunt, unprecedented celebrations started in the Darjeeling hills of West Bengal, the singer's native place.
The celebrations started as soon as the announcement was made by actor John Abraham late Sunday night with people of all walks of life bursting crackers, hugging and applying 'gulal'(colour powder) to each other.
Fireworks took place in all over the district. The entire region was decorated with colourful lights, flags and festoons since yesterday evening. Prasant's win was expected as a large number of people had been sending SMS votes in favour of the singer since September 21.
All educational institutions declared a holiday today to celebrate the victory. Big processions were taken out in Gangtok, Darjeeling Sadar, Kurseong and Kalimpong sub-divisions to mark the celebrations.
To maintain law and order, the district administration has enhanced the deployment of security personnel throughout the hills.
A report from Gangtok said the people of Sikkim, particularly the youths, burst firecrackers to celebrate the crowning of Prashant Tamang as the Indian Idol at a musical competition of an entertainment channel last night.
The people, who were glued to their television sets during the live telecast of the finale of the Indian Idol competition featuring Tamang and Amit Paul, a native of Meghalaya as the two main contenders in the reckoning for the title, burst into instant celebrations as soon as the name of the Darjeeling boy was announced as the victor.
People congratulated each other over the crowning of the 24-year-old cop as the new Indian Idol even as youth took to the streets to celebrate the momentous occasion and raised slogans like 'Prashant zindabad'. The celebrations continued throughout the night.
