A different goal

It’s been three years since Baichung Bhutia, the captain of the Indian football team, got married to his long-time girlfriend Madhuri Tipnis. And now, Baichung has revealed that he finally plans to have a baby “in another year or so”.
What’s more, to take things forward in the right direction, Madhuri has already given up her job as an airhostess and has settled down as a full-fledged homemaker.

“I have cut down on parties and night-outs and become more home-bound these days. Marriage has changed me a lot for sure. We are planning to have a baby in a year or so,” says Baichung, who silenced all his critics with a stellar performance in the just concluded Nehru Cup where he spearheaded the team to the champion’s podium.
Baichung reveals that he lived-in with Madhuri at his Kolkata residence for almost two years before their marriage at his hometown in Tinkitam, Sikkim. “We decided to opt for a live-in relationship before we took the plunge. It was a good decision to make as it gave us an opportunity to be closer to each other. I am very happy the way my wife has handled my life before and after marriage,” he says. “Marriage has changed me a lot as a person and I have learnt to be more responsible,” he adds.
It was 1993 when Baichung landed up in Kolkata to join the East Bengal club. “I was a small boy of 16 years then. Life had been a struggle. But thank God, my game started improving and I began to score,” he says.
Ask him about the rumours about his retirement from the game and Baichung rubbishes them. But that doesn’t mean that he has not thought about what to do after he hangs up his boots. “I plan to start an academy of my own. That is a long-term plan that I have,” he says.
Baichung is not forthcoming with the details of where or how he plans to set up the academy. Coax him and he says that it might not be in Sikkim, his home state, where the government has recently built a stadium in his name. “It’s a part of the final plan. But that will only happen when I decide not to play anymore,” he adds.
But surprise, surprise — the football star is actually receiving film offers!
“It is true that I have received some film offers, but they have all come from regional directors. Some of the scripts were good — I don’t mind playing a cameo if a big Bollywood director approaches me,” Baichung says. Doesn’t that sound too filmy? You bet.
