All night frenzy @ Gangtok


Gangtok, Sept. 24: Celebrations over Prashant Tamang’s victory in the final of Indian Idol last night continued till the early hours today.
A half-day was declared in the Sikkim government offices with most employees clearing out after attendance to celebrate the victory of the Darjeeling boy. The declaration was made by acting chief minister D.D. Bhutia. Sikkim chief minister Pawan Chamling is away in New York to attend a Northeast business conference there. Bhutia has also declared a holiday for all educational institutes and schools in the state.
The entire hill state had come out in support of Prashant with Chamling asking people to vote for the pahar ko gaurav (pride of the hills).
The Calcutta police constable for his part acknowledged the support from Sikkim at the grand finale held at the National Small Industries Corporation ground in the Okhla Industrial Estate, New Delhi. Over 7 crore votes were cast for the final, a record for the music reality show.
The news of Prashant’s victory reached here almost two hours before the end of the programme. The partying and celebrations started soon after. People gathered at Titanic Park on M.G. Marg and firecrackers lit up the Gangtok sky.
