2 Days Session of Sikkim Assembly begins


Gangtok,Sep06 : The two days session of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly commenced today on September 6th to discuss matters related to finance and general business. The Chief Minister Dr. Pawan Chamling arrived to attend the session along with all Sikkim Democratic Front MLAs and also in attendance was alone Sikkim Congress MLA Shree AcharyaTshering Lama.
The Session was called to order by Shri Dawa Norbu Takarpa, Speaker after observing a minute of silence in respect of departed soul of first chief minister of Sikkim late Kazi Lhendup Dorjee.
Dr. Chamling presented bill for amendment in Panchayat bill as well as Sikkim Prison Act while D.D.Bhutia,Minister UD&HD presented amendment bill for Sikkim Municipalities Act . The amendment bill for Sikkim Companies Act was presented by Shri R.B.Subba, Law Minister.

The 2 days session is likely to pass amendments in a number of Acts which Includes Sikkim Companies Act, Sikkim Panchayat Act, Sikkim Prison Act. etc. The most significant amendment involves in Panchayat Act which would increase the reservation quota for women from present 33% to 40 % at Panchayat level.

It may be recalled that session of SLA earlier scheduled for August 9 was cancelled due to some unavoidable circumstances. The Assembly session assumes significance also as it is being held after protest hunger strike on hydel projects in Dzongu which was called off after 63 days on personal appeal of Dr. Chamling.
