SIKKIM MUNICIPAL POLLS MAY TAKE PLACE IN JAN '08

GANGTOK, August 29: If everything goes well with the second announcement of the State Municipality Notification, which is likely to be released in the second week of September, then the Municipality election will be held in January next year.
Sources inform that the new State Municipality Notification (SMN) with latest amendment will be released soon. Sources also reveal that five wards have been cutoff from the earlier list with addition of one.
Talking with the scribes today, Ujjwal Gurung, Additional Secretary, Urban Development and Housing Department said that one month of time will be provided for the people to file or raise objections on the amended notification.
Earlier, the Panchayat and Municipality elections were scheduled to be held simultaneously but owing to amendment in the State Municipality notification, the tentative date for the Municipal election will be in the first month of 2008.
“The State Election Commission has also demanded three months time from UD&HD for the Municipal election,” sources reveal.
However, as per the new SMN, seven Nagar Panchayats have been identified, for which the Nagar Panchayat elections will be held next year. The enlisted Nagar Panchayats are Mangan, Soreng, Pelling, Geyzing, Rabongla, Pakyong and Rhenock.
Likewise, the identified five Nagar Palikas are Mangan, Soreng, Pelling, Geyzing, Rabong, Pakyong and Rhenock.
“Owing to people’s property tax which will be new for the state of Sikkim, the people are not that much interested in staying at Municipality areas,” informed Ujjwal Gurung.
