Imphal, Aug. 9: Nearly 250 athletes from the region are expected to compete in the three-day 1st North East ZonalAthletic Meet to be held here from August 24 to 26.
Partcipants from Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Mizoram and Manipur have confirmed participation in the events. Although there are fewer athletes from states like Mizoram, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh with around 15 participants each, the rest of the states will send more than 50 players.
Apart from the series of short and long distance run, the events include long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus throw, hammer throw and javelin. All these events will be held for both men and women.
According to the Athletic Association of Manipur life president, A.K. Surjit, the meet will also have triathlon for boys and girls under 11. This comprises 100-m long jump, shot put, high jump and 800-m.
he further said the event was aimed at reviving athletics in the region.
