A TUNNEL BETWEEN SIKKIM & TIBET

GANGTOK: Members of Sikkim Chamber of Commerce (SCC) have suggested to the Centre that tunnelling of rail link from Gangtok to Yatung would be the best way to develop a safe and short link between the two towns are on similar heights. “The tunnel distance covers only around 20 km but the road link from Gangtok to Nathula is 56 km and again 18 km from Nathula to Yatung,” the Sikkim Chamber of Commerce president, Mr SK Sharda, said. “The tunnels are not going to effect the environment as everything would be underground and there is no shortage of technologies in the world to build such tunnels,” Mr Sharda, said. The Centre, it may be recalled, has announced the introduction of the rail route in the Himalayan state of Sikkim. Initially, the proposed rail link would start from Sevoke in West Bengal to Rangpo in Sikkim, a stretch of 52.7 kilometre.
