SHRP not to contest the local bodies election


Gangtok: Sikkim Himali Rajya Parishad (SHRP) has declared that it wouldn’t contest ensuing panchayat and municipal election held in October. SHRP which has come up as one of the most active opposition parties in the state has spurned the panchayat election saying that panchayat is the platform of the grass root people to share their basic needs, redress the grievances. If we politicize this panchayat by contesting election the situation to fight each other in villages and disharmony come which do not benefit our society,” Dr. A.D.Subba, the party president said. He also told that the SDF had brought a bad culture contesing in the panchayat election. “Panchayat shouldn’t be formed on the basis of party politics, it should be left independently as through it the government wouldn’t be formed,” Subba said. Rejecting the view of possibility of any alliance of five oppositions for contesting of ensuing election Dr. Subba said, “We don’t feel of any need of alliance of five oppositions as we alone are enough for any movement to fight against the atrocities of government.” He, however, also added the rider, “and it’s not meant that the alliance won’t be anyhow among the oppositions.” According to the situation and consequence and based on the common minimum programme the party could consider over the issue,”Dr. Subba said. Dr. Subba also unfolded the fourteen days New Delhi visit programme of his party’s delegation. On 18 May the party delegation comprised of Tara Sharestha , DB Thatal, TR Chettri, R. Sharma, Basant Kr. Rai led by Dr. A.D. Subba had left for Delhi and they met UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Union Home minister Shivaraj Patiel, Union Broadcasting minister Priya Ranjan Das Munshi and four other minister of state. About the fruitful result of Delhi visit Dr. Subba said, they submitted a memorandum which includes the demand of full-fledged starting of Sikkim Doordarshan, employment guarantees for educated unemployed youths and central intervention for stopping of power project in the protected area like Jongu as the project will exacerbate the pristine environment of the tribal areas that causes the damage of Sikkim’s fragile geography. Referring to the recent visit of union power Minister Sushil Kr. Shinde, Dr. Subbas said that was the result of his party’s Delhi visit. “We had met Shinde in Delhi and briefed him all the unusual thing taking place in the name of power project in response of our request he had assured us to visit. Sikim, that’s why he came,” Subba told. He also further said, “Also home minister Shivaraj Patil has assured soon after the presidential election, the government is to starts its action smoothly in Sikkim,”
