GANGTOK AMDO-GOLAI RESTORATION WORK IN PROGRESS
Gangtok,(PTI): Constant showers over the past few days have triggered a landslide at Indira Bypass injuring a traffic policeman on duty, DIG (range) Akshay Sachdeva said today.
In between Tadong and Deorali of East Sikkim, Indira Bye-pass is situated, which starts right from Amdo Golai and joints the road at Sichey,District court and Palzor Stadium Road, Gangtok. Of late, Indira Bye-pass is nowadays over crowded with the construction of many private buildings ever since the bye-pass road opened in late 1990. Owing to overgrowing traffic system, the bye-pass was constructed and opened but at the same time construction in and around the road at private land took place. Since a week ago, the rock near Amdo Golai started to crack and slip with mud after incessant rainfall.
Huge boulders from a hill next to the traffic point at Amdo Golai, about two km from here, came tumbling down on the bypass injuring traffic constable Chabilal Chettri and blocking traffic along the route yesterday.
SDM Gangtok, AB Karki said that the Police, GREF, Civil Defense, Forest and Irrigations have been pressed into service to monitor the slide and respond to any emergencies arising out of it.
He said that assessment of the damages is in progress and will be completed latest by tomorrow. The roads may take another two days to clear for normal traffic, it is learnt. It was confirmed here today that two persons along with a police personnel sustained minor injuries in the landslide.
While the Border Roads Organisation personnel were clearing the road, Siliguri-bound vehicles were using an alternative route, Sachdeva said.
Residents of six houses in the slide zone were taken to safer places, he said. There was no electricity in the area through out the night and day as work towards repair of power supply was undertaken by Department of Energy and a massive operation to clear the road and also to build a support wall to secure the hilltop from further slip and slide as monsoon hits Sikkim.
