NAMCHI: Production of food grains in the state during 1991 was 31 percent, today that has decreased to 17 percent despite the fact that 80 percent of the state population still depends on agricultural activities.
This was discussed at the district level awareness meet on Participatory Human Development for the Gram Panchayats of South District held here today.
The chief guest of the occasion DN Thakarpa, Speaker to the Sikkim Legislative Assembly expressed is regret over the decreasing trend of food grain productivity and cattle farming in the State.
“Animal husbandry is one of the most important source of livelihood but people are abandoning the practice of farming gradually, thereby inviting socio-economic inflation in the economy,” opined Thakarpa today.
