GANGTOK & OTHER SIKKIM TOWN READY FOR FACELIFT

Kolkata, May 23: A four-member team of the building and construction authority (BAC), Singapore, recently submitted a representation delineating an urban develop-ment plan for Gangtok and eight towns of Sikkim.
The team comprised BAC director, internal operations, Kohiling-Ji, deputy centre director Dr Liongshang Young, vice-president and planner Loong Yee Mun and R S Prakash, director South Asia.
Chief minister Pawan Chamling had during a visit to Singapore in June last year invited BAC to explore the possibility of developing the small hill towns here. The team asked the Sikkim government to chalk out a comprehensive plan and a DPR on the urban sector, forestry and environment which should reach Singapore by June so that they are able to start work by July this year.
Understandably, the government’s efforts were welcomed by the people who felt that they would increase tourist inflow. They also hoped that the newly developed towns would be less congested than Gangtok.
