Gangtok: Chief Minister Dr.PawanChamling address in Chintan Bhawan delivered at the function on launch of Green Mission 2007 on May 26 called upon common man to get involved into movement that at heart is all about sustainable development and Man living with nature and Safeguarding the Earth for future generation.Elaborating on the re-launch of State Green Mission, Mr Chamling explained that the basic idea behind the Mission was to preserve Sikkim’s greenery and fragile environment as well as to build an awareness about environment. He has urged individuals and public at large to take up the environmental challenge with greater determination.
The Meeting was attended by gathering of Ministers,MLAs,Govt.Officers,Media &Sikkim Police officials.it was started with lighting of lamp by Chief Minister along with Forest Minister Shree Subedi.
“Sikkim belongs to the future generation. If they are more informed and connected with the local environment, they will care for it that much more”, he said. The CM reminded that his government had always implemented environment friendly policies even when they appeared politically problematic and urged that since Sikkim had a fragile ecosystem, conservation efforts, even when they appeared strict, be supported because that is what the land demanded.
He also urged that the grass roots representatives understood the requirements of the environment better and implemented the State Government’s results and performance in their true spirit. In this connection he highlighted the Smriti Vans floated by his government and observed that concept implementation had performed poorly in this regard and Many had tried to hoodwink the people and the government by planting Smriti Van signboards in already demarcated forest areas. This was gone so far as to put a sign board in his own name 'Pawan Chamling Smriti Van' which was not in good taste hence he got it removed without disclosing name of those involved.
He appealed to people who despite a ban on use of plastic bags in the state capital Gangtok continue to use it and further go on avoiding their civic responsibilities by throwing same in 'jhoras'of Gangtok,Namchi or in Villages and blame it all on government for choking these Jhoras.
He also asked for removal of hordes of banners, hoardings, cables wire that gives a clumsy look to Gangtok even if it belongs to SDF.
Dr.Pawan Chamling also spoke of need to check construction sites which removes sands and soils from site and dump it on jhoras and rivers without giving a thought of environment. The Main points on which address of Chief Minister stressed were-
