GANGTOK, May 25: The State Unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed its apprehensions over the possible conversion of a car park into a government department building.
The BJP has reacted to reports indicating that the existing shopping complex cum car park located at Development Area here may be brought down and a new building will be constructed in its place to accommodate a government department.
The Shopping Complex, which lays vacant at this moment, has a car park facility on the top floor, adjacent to the road.
The BJP, in a recent letter No.11/ 2007/SS/BJP - Dated: May 23, 2007 to the Chief Secretary and the Secretary, Urban Development and Housing Department, has said that the decision is in violation of the needs of the people of Development Area.
“The Super market in Development Area is an outcome of the initial project of car park for Development Area. The project initially started as car park and later this was changed into a shopping cum car park. The proposal for car park at that time was initiated at the request of the residents of Development Area,” the press release read. “The car park above the shopping complex is the only car park in Development Area and the removal of the cark park will lead to total absence of parking facility in the area and the residents of the area will have the road side as their only parking space,” it added.
The BJP has further said that the “road is already narrow and the parking of vehicles on the road will lead to chaos and the residents of the Development Area will have no place to park their vehicles.”
The BJP has requested the Government to “examine this on a priority basis and necessary action taken before the car park is completely eliminated from Development Area.”
