Army's firepower show at over 13,000 feet in Sikkim


GANGTOK: A huge crowd gathered at Thegu at a height of over 13,000 feet beyond the Changu lake in east Sikkim to witness a firepower demonstration by the army today. Aimed at showcasing its lethal and precision firepower delivery systems, the demonstration saw the use of army aviation helicopters, 155mm Bofors guns, light artillery 105mm field guns, mortars and infantry weapons. The artillery brigade of the army participated in the thunderous show, watched by a huge crowd including Bimla Rao, wife of Sikkim Governor V Rama Rao, Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court A N Roy, Sikkim DGP C M Ravindran, General Officer Commanding of the 17 Mountain Division Major General K V S Lalotra, 33 Corps Commander Gen C K Saboo and a host of school children. Officials of the Sikkim police, Sikkim Armed Police and Indo-Tibetan Border Police also attended the demonstration whose aim was also to generate awareness among local youth about the army's capabilities.Speaking on the occasion, Gen Saboo said such demonstrations build confidence among the people and attract youth to take up careers in the armed forces.
