87 villages in Sikkim to get phone service by june 2008

NEW DELHI, Apr 28: The ministry of communications and information technology has launched a scheme to provide support for setting up and managing 7871 infrastructure sites spread over 500 districts covering 2,12,304 villages across the country for provision of mobile services including other wireless access services like Wireless in Local Loop (WLL) using fixed or mobile terminals in the specified rural and remote areas, where there is no existing fixed or mobile coverage.The Union minister of state for communication and information technology Dr. Shakeel Ahmad informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, in a written reply to a question by Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi and Raj Mohinder Majitha that 81 clusters have been set up for expansion of telephone network in rural areas in the country. The telephone facility will be provided in all such areas by June 2008.
Towers will be installed at every infrastructure site. All the eight North Eastern states including Sikkim will have one cluster each.
Mizoram will have 71 towers in eight districts covering 361 villages. Sikkim will have eight towers for 87 villages in three districts. Tripura will have 147 towers for 655 villages in four villages.
